La Perle

La Perle is unlike anything else in Dubai. Created by Franco Dragone - the director behind Celine Dion's Las Vegas residency and several Cirque du Soleil productions - La Perle by Dragone is a permanent aqua theatre show that has no equivalent in the region. The 1,300-seat theatre was built specifically for the production, and the combination of aerial acrobatics, high-speed motorcycles, and diving into an on-stage pool makes it a genuinely distinct experience.

Dubai Water Canal

The Dubai Water Canal is excellent for walking. The 3.2 km artificial canal completed in 2016 has a paved promenade on both banks, running from near Safa Park all the way to the Business Bay crossing. It passes under the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge, where a permanent waterfall feature is illuminated after dark, and the flat, traffic-free surface makes it one of the better urban walks in Dubai.

Dining on the waterfront of Dubai Water Canal

Dining on the waterfront has real variety. The canal promenade has attracted a cluster of restaurants and cafes with outdoor terraces facing the water. Options range from casual all-day dining to high-end steakhouses and a strong showing of Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine. The density of restaurants makes it easy to combine a meal with a pre- or post-show walk.

Canal cruises

Canal cruises provide a different perspective on Downtown Dubai. Boarding a dhow or abra from Business Bay puts you on the water looking back at the skyline from a vantage point most visitors never see. The evening dhow dinner cruises are particularly effective when the towers are lit up and the waterfall bridge is illuminated - a setting that photographs well and feels markedly different from land-based sightseeing.

Downtown Dubai

It is adjacent to Downtown Dubai without the same congestion. Business Bay sits immediately south of Downtown Dubai, separated by the canal. Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa are a 10-minute drive. The Business Bay Metro station on the Red Line connects the neighbourhood directly to the wider city. Staying or spending an evening here gives you proximity to the major Downtown sights without being in the thickest concentration of tourist traffic.

Best ways to explore Business Bay

The promenade is flat, well lit after dark, and lined with cafes. Walking from the Business Bay crossing to the waterfall bridge at Sheikh Zayed Road takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes at a relaxed pace. Start from the RTA abra station near the crossing and walk south.

Getting there

Business Bay Metro station is on the Red Line, approximately 10 minutes by foot from the canal promenade. Taxis and rideshare apps are readily available throughout Dubai and drop off directly at Al Habtoor City for La Perle. Paid parking is available at Al Habtoor City and along Bay Square.

💡 Insider note

The waterfall feature under the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge is best seen after dark when it is illuminated. From the canal promenade it is visible without any entrance fee - look for it roughly halfway along the walk between the Business Bay crossing and the Safa Park end of the canal.

Free things to do in Business Bay

Not everything in Business Bay requires a booking. The canal itself provides a genuinely worthwhile evening on no budget at all.

Tips for visiting Business Bay

  • Book La Perle in advance - the show sells out several weeks ahead during the November-to-February high season. Online booking through Headout is the fastest way to secure seats.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the canal promenade. The paved surface is flat but long - the full round trip from the Business Bay crossing to the Safa Park end is over 6 km.
  • Evening visits are better than daytime. Most of Business Bay's appeal - the lit promenade, the canal cruises, the waterfall bridge - works far better after dark.
  • The canal promenade gets busy on weekend evenings (Thursday and Friday nights in Dubai). Arrive before 7 pm for a quieter experience, or embrace the social atmosphere with the crowds.
  • Al Habtoor City has its own dining options on-site if you want to keep the evening simple. The three hotels (Habtoor Palace, V Hotel, Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City) all have restaurants and bars within walking distance of the La Perle theatre.
  • Dress modestly for the canal area if you are not going to a restaurant or the show - Dubai's public spaces expect covered shoulders and knees. Smart casual is acceptable everywhere in Business Bay.
  • Rideshare apps are more reliable than street taxis for reaching Al Habtoor City after the show - the surge in demand at show end time means pre-booking a return ride is worth doing.
  • If visiting in summer (May to September), plan canal walks for early morning or after 9 pm. Temperatures frequently exceed 40C by midday and the humidity makes extended outdoor exposure uncomfortable.

Should you stay in Business Bay?

Business Bay makes the most sense as a base for travellers who want to be close to Downtown Dubai without paying Downtown Dubai hotel rates, and who will benefit from being within walking distance of the canal and La Perle.

  • Stay here if: you are attending La Perle more than once, prioritise canal-side dining and walking, or need proximity to Downtown Dubai for meetings or sightseeing without staying in the tourist core.
  • Consider staying elsewhere if: you want to be on the beach (stay in Jumeirah or Dubai Marina), need budget accommodation (Business Bay is predominantly mid-to-upscale), or your itinerary is focused on Old Dubai (stay in Bur Dubai or Deira).

Key hotels in Business Bay include the Habtoor Palace Dubai (LXR Hotels & Resorts), Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City, Taj Dubai, Millennium Atria Business Bay, and the V Hotel. All three Al Habtoor City hotels put you within a 5-minute walk of La Perle.
